Cold and Flu Season is here
Share
Winter is in full effect and with that comes higher risk of cold, flu, and many other illnesses. We all grew up hearing our Mothers say you are going to “catch” a cold, put a jacket on. The reality is that colder temperatures aren't the reason we get sick more often in the winter. The reason is that we aren't outside as much and we are wearing more clothes when we do go out. We get less sun and therefore less Vitamin D and with less Vitamin D our immune systems aren't as strong.
Even during warmer months we are spending less time outside and as a result we are dangerously low in Vitamin D. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 50% of the world's population is clinically deficient in vitamin D. Fortunately, this deficiency is one of the easiest for us to supplement with and one of the easiest for us to fix.
The benefits of Vitamin D are vast, here are a few:
-
Bone health: Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is essential for maintaining strong bones and preventing conditions like osteoporosis.
-
Immune system support: Vitamin D plays a role in the functioning of the immune system, helping to protect against infections and autoimmune disorders.
-
Muscle function: Vitamin D is important for muscle function and strength, and low levels of the vitamin have been linked to an increased risk of falls, particularly in older adults.
-
Heart health: Some research suggests that vitamin D may help reduce the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.
-
Mood regulation: Have you ever had the winter blues? Most people have and big reason is lack of Vitamin D. It plays a key role in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood, and low levels of the vitamin have been linked to an increased risk of depression.
There was a very interesting study published in 2023 looking at the impact of Vitamin D and different neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. At present, approximately 48 million people are suffering from these diseases and it is increasing at the rate of 10 million every single year. According to this study, Vitamin D has been shown to help neuropathological features and vitamin supplementation contributes to a better prognosis.
As mentioned, fortunately Vitamin D3 deficiency is one of the easiest to solve. First, get outside and soak up the sun. Alternatively, supplements are inexpensive and available.
